Single trip travel insurance at a glance
With Staysure’s single-trip travel insurance, you could get up to 104 days of cover while visiting multiple countries during a single trip. Our award-winning insurance protects all ages, pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation costs up to £15,000 on Signature policies, and more. Getting a quote is easy online or over the phone.
We’ve specialised in travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions since 2004. 97% of customers are able to get medical cover with us. We hold a Defaqto 5-star rating for our Signature policy, and have more 5-star Trustpilot reviews than any other UK travel insurance provider.
Single-trip travel insurance is also known as short stay travel insurance or one-trip travel insurance. It covers you for one holiday to multiple destinations and up to 104 days per trip, depending on your age. This means you can dip your toes in multiple time zones during your journey. It’s a great option if you don’t travel more than twice per year.
Is single-trip holiday insurance right for my trip?
The right travel insurance depends on the kind of trip you’re taking. For one holiday, single-trip travel insurance might be all you need. However, if you plan on travelling frequently or for longer periods, our annual multi-trip and long-stay policies might be worth exploring.
Single-trip travel insurance
If you love travelling only once a year and not for longer than three months at a time, then single-trip holiday insurance is probably your best bet. It usually costs less than annual multi-trip or long stay cover, because you are only paying for what you need.
With Staysure, you’re covered as soon as you buy your policy, so it would be ideal to buy travel insurance right after booking your trip. Depending on your age, you might be able to buy your single-trip policy up to 18 months before your travel.
Annual multi-trip travel insurance
If you travel more than twice a year, our annual multi-trip cover may offer the best value for money. It will keep you covered for up to 183 days over a set 12-month period.
This policy covers all of your yearly trips, allowing you to save time by skipping the admin of buying separate policies each time you travel.
The best part is that you are not tied to set dates. Should you change your plans or want to go on an extra holiday throughout the year, you’ll still be covered.
Long-stay travel insurance
Want to take your time exploring the world? With Staysure’s long-stay travel insurance, you can travel for up to 18 months, depending on your age.
This is a perfect option if you want to go on a sabbatical, go backpacking, or take a gap year.
Like our single-trip travel insurance, you’ll be covered for a round trip to one or more destinations, but for a longer time period.
Why choose Staysure?
Up to unlimited medical emergency expenses
Generous cancellation cover up to £15,000
We’ve given over 12m people peace of mind
Most pre-existing medical conditions covered
No upper age limit on our policies
What does single-trip travel insurance cover?
If you want your yearly holiday to go without a hitch, then you need to make sure you're covered for all the things that matter most.
What’s covered?
emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.
getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.
cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel, or experience a bereavement.
cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.
lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.
pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.
Example: You’re hiking at an altitude of 1000 metres in Italy when your foot catches a rock. Gravity has its way with you, and you roll downhill. Unfortunately, you break your leg mid-fall. We cover your transport to a nearby hospital, and we foot your medical bill. If necessary, we will also arrange safe repatriation back home after your hospital stay.
What isn’t covered?
cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.
missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike**, severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.
undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.
unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.
activities not listed on your policy – like extreme or cruises, unless you’ve added them.
travelling against advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.
incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.
going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.
trips taken for business or work – your policy is for leisure trips only.
travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.
Example: You are having a ball during your trip to Ibiza and may have had too much to drink when you accidentally slip and fall on the dancefloor. Because Staysure doesn’t cover claims caused by excessive alcohol use, we won’t be able to cover your medical expenses.

“Our single-trip travel insurance is ideal for those dreamy, once-off holidays you’ve been planning for the whole year, because it protects one set of dates and one set of costs properly. The trick is buying as soon as you book and making sure your cancellation cover matches what you’ve paid. Then, if the worst happens and you have to cancel for a policy-approved reason, you’ll be covered.

How long can I travel for with single-trip insurance?
How long you can travel while being covered by our single-trip travel insurance depends on your age and all the regions you’ll be visiting.
For example, if you’re turning 65 and exploring Europe, our policy can cover you for up to 550 days. If you are 80+ years young and travelling to the USA, we can cover you for up to 104 days. It’s best to purchase your travel insurance just after finalising your holiday booking, to make sure you are covered well ahead of time.

How to buy single-trip travel insurance
Buying single-trip travel insurance has never been easier. Simply give us a call or get a quick online quote to start the process.
1. Tell us where you want to go
To get started on your quote, we’ll go over your travel plans. We need to know who’s coming along, where you’re heading, how long your trip will be, and whether you need insurance for a single trip or annual multi-trip cover.
Top tip: for cruises, it’s important to include every destination on your itinerary, as well as any flights to and from your port.
2. Share your medical history with us
Next on the list, we’ll go over some health questions with you so we can make sure you get the best medical cover while travelling. Now is the time to tell us about any health concerns that needed medication, medical advice, or treatment during the last two years.
We also ask about any past heart or circulation conditions – even if they weren’t recent.
3. Get a tailored quote
Once we have everything we need, we’ll give you your personalised quote, either online or by reading it out loud over the phone.
You’ll be able to choose your level of cover and add any optional extras that suit your trip, such as cruise travel insurance or winter sports cover. If you’d like more time to think it over, we can also send your quote by email so you can go through it in your own time.
Many experts agree that buying travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday is the best way to go. Martin Lewis calls this ASAB, or Buy As Soon As you Book. By doing this, you’ll be covered during the run-up to your holiday and while you’re abroad.
Travel insurance can’t be backdated, so it’s best to get it locked in before you are on holiday. If you still have to get your policy in place for future travels, it’s not too late. Simply get in touch with our friendly team to get a quote.
How much is single-trip travel insurance?
Single-trip insurance, like all of our policies, is priced around you, your needs, and your trip. Yes, your holiday destination will influence the price, but so will your age, your pre-existing medical conditions, how long you plan on travelling, and if you want to insure specific things, like flights and accommodation.
If you’re only going on holiday once every 12 months, single-trip travel insurance can offer real value because you are only paying for what you need. However, if there’s a possibility of travelling two or more times during this year, then it might be worth comparing quotes on both our single-trip and annual-trip travel insurance policies.
How to get cheaper single-trip travel insurance
Want to shrink the costs of your travel insurance while still getting the most out of your policy?
Keep these tips and tricks in mind before you buy:
get covered early – if you buy your cover as soon as you book your trip, you will have all the protection you need should you need to cancel because of a policy-approved reason.
go for a higher excess – one of the best ways to lower your premium is to increase your excess. Just be sure to settle on an excess you are comfortable paying should you need to.
consider another policy – if you are going to travel more than twice per year, an annual multi-trip policy might be cheaper than multiple single-trip policies.
leave the add-ons – only get add-ons, like cruise or gadget cover, that you need.
be honest about your health – when you declare your full medical history, we have everything we need to tailor your cover, so you are protected when you need it most.
get group cover – our group travel insurance lets you save on costs by covering everyone under one policy.
travel light – lower your premium by reducing the baggage limit on your policy.
find a discount – make sure you drop by our discounts page before buying so you can save on your policy.

What our expert says…
“Saving money on your policy where you can is great. But if your policy is trimmed in such a way that it no longer serves your needs or keeps you covered, then it won’t mean much in an emergency situation. At Staysure, we take all your travel needs into consideration when giving you a tailored quote, so you always get the most value out of your cover.

Voted Best Travel Insurance 9 years running
The British Travel Awards have recognised us as the Best Company for Travel Insurance nine years in a row (2016-2025). This achievement is based on the votes of real customers, showing the trust travellers place in us.
This award is only given to travel companies that provide stellar service to their customers. It shows that we prioritise customer service, round-the-clock support when you need it most, and a reliable and speedy claims process.
Other single-trip travellers often ask...
According to the trade association for UK travel agents (ABTA)’s Holiday Habits 2025 – 2026 report, only 54% of UK travellers think getting travel insurance is essential to feeling protected when going on holiday. But plans can change at the drop of a hat, and not having travel insurance means you will have to cover the costs should anything go wrong.
By taking out a travel insurance policy as soon as you book, you can rest assured that should something covered by your policy prevent you from going on holiday or cut your trip short, you will have financial support to fall back on.
A single-trip policy covers you for only one trip, whereas an annual multi-trip policy covers you for lots of trips during the year. Single-trip insurance lets you pay only for the cover you’ll use, and multi-trip insurance spares you the admin of buying separate policies each time you travel.
If you go on holiday often, a multi-trip policy may be cheaper compared to several single-trip policies. But the main drawback of an annual multi-trip policy is that you are more limited on the number of days you can travel per trip.
More often than not, our single-trip travel insurance covers you for longer trips, but the number of days you can travel depends on your age and where you’re going.
For example, if you haven’t turned 70 yet, both our single-trip and multi-trip policies can cover your holiday for up to 50 days. If you’re over 70, you can enjoy cover for up to 50 days on our single-trip policy, and only up to 35 days on our annual multi-trip policy. For more information on all our policies, you can browse through our policy documents.
A single trip can be seen as one round trip starting when you leave your home and go to your holiday destination and ending when you return home. During this single trip, you can country-hop as much as you like and go to more than one holiday destination.
If something were to happen, and you have to be repatriated back home, your single-trip travel insurance will end when you arrive back home or when you arrive at a UK hospital.
Any other holiday or trip which begins after you get back home will not be covered under your original policy. You also have to travel within the timeframe you are covered for. For example, if your policy says you are covered for up to 104 days for your single trip, then you have to return home within that time to make sure you stay covered.
If you are travelling to multiple holiday destinations, it’s best to let us know before you go, so you can get the cover you need for all the places you’ll visit.
Whether you are planning a cruise to the Caribbean islands or seeing the Great Pyramids of Giza, we can help you travel almost anywhere. However, your holiday destination has to be considered safe by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and fall within the travel regions you declared.
To make sure you are fully covered, all you have to do is tell us which countries you’ll be travelling to when getting your quote. Next, we’ll categorise your trip by travel region to make sure your cover and price fit your plans.
Travel regions we cover:
Region 1: Includes the UK and Europe, but excludes Cyprus, Egypt, Greece (including the Greek Islands), Malta, Morocco, Spain (including the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands), Turkey and Tunisia.
Region 3: Worldwide, excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, China, Bermuda, Mexico, Thailand and Hong Kong.
Region 4: Worldwide, including all countries, including the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
If you’ll be country hopping, be sure to include every destination you’ll be travelling to in your quote, so it shows on your validation certificate.
Top tip: You won’t have to purchase additional cover for a stopover country if your layover is less than 12 hours, and you won’t be leaving the airport.
To make sure you are fully covered, it’s best to buy travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday. This makes sure you are covered well ahead of your trip in case a policy-approved event stops you from travelling.
But if you can’t buy cover immediately, be sure to buy before the start date of your trip. We won’t be able to cover you once you’ve departed, except if you renew an existing Staysure annual multi-trip policy with the same level of cover while you are on holiday.
When giving you a cover quote, we’ll go through your entire medical history to make sure we are up to date with the medical cover you need. We’ll then be able to tailor your travel insurance to make sure you are covered for policy-approved pre-existing medical conditions.
If you need to add a new medical condition to your policy or want more information on how to make a claim, simply log in to your MyStaysure account.
If you were to fall ill after you bought your travel insurance and it causes you to cancel your trip, we should be able to cover your travel costs if you can’t travel.
According to ABTA, 37% of UK travellers prefer going on a 7-day cruise. If you tell us about your sea voyage when buying your policy, we will be able to cover your cruise for things like cruise cancellation, medical emergencies and baggage cover. You will also need to tell us about every country you'll be porting at during your cruise holiday to be fully covered.
If you want more protection, our Cruise Plus add-on can cover you for cabin confinement and any resulting unused excursions, missed port departures, cruise interruptions and itinerary changes. This add-on is available on our Comprehensive and Signature policies and also covers river cruises.
Cruise operators may ask for proof of cruise insurance before you board. So, if cruise cover is not already covered by your policy, it might be a good idea to add it if you want to enjoy the open blue stress-free.
If you are only going on one holiday per year, single-trip travel insurance may offer you the best value because it only insures the set of dates you’ll be travelling. This means you won’t be paying extra for travel dates you won’t need.
You can also choose the policy that fits your needs best, so you match the price of your baggage value and travel fees in case your baggage gets lost, or you have to cancel your trip.
If you’ll be travelling more than twice during the year, it might be worth comparing pricing on our single-trip and annual multi-trip policies to make sure you are getting the best price for your cover.
Your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will cover you for state-funded healthcare in Europe, but it doesn’t replace travel insurance. This means that should you fall ill or suffer an injury, you can get treated at a public hospital free of charge or at a lower cost, but only while travelling in Europe. If you travel outside of Europe, your GHIC won’t cover you.
With travel insurance, you can get medical cover in all the countries that are declared on your Validation Certificate. Your cover may include things like ambulance callouts, repatriation, and other travel essentials, like trip cancellation cover.
It might be worth combining your GHIC with travel insurance, so you can be covered for both your medical needs and policy-approved travel delays or cancellations.
Got a fun activity in mind that you want to explore while on holiday? A lot of UK travellers plan their trips around their favourite pastimes.
We cover more than 80 adventurous activities as standard, including boogie boarding, catamaran sailing, ice skating, jet skiing, volleyball, swimming, surfing, Pilates, rowing, skateboarding, snorkelling, water parks, and cycling, with some exceptions when it comes to personal accident and liability cover.
If you love to golf, you’ll be happy to know that our golf cover comes standard on all our policies. But should you need it, we also provide extra golf cover, which covers things like golf equipment and your non-refundable golfing fees.
